Cantigny Park to host Veterans Day 5K run, pancake breakfast
Cantigny Park will conduct its annual Veterans Day 5K Run/Walk at 9 a.m. Nov. 1. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans in Wheaton. In conjunction with the event, American Legion Cantigny Post 556 will host a pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the park’s visitors center. The breakfast will include eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy. For more information, call 630-260-8167.

Waterline Writers to feature local columnist

Waterline Writers event to feature KC Chronicle columnist
The Kane County Chronicle’s Jennifer DuBose will be the featured speaker Oct. 19 at the Waterline Writers literature event at 7 p.m. Oct. 19 at Water Street Studios, 160 S. Water St. in downtown Batavia. The gathering also will feature other local writers, including Dolores Becker and Angela Ogburn. A $5 donation is suggested. 

Mothers Club to host annual crafts show
The Batavia Mothers’ Club Foundation will conduct its 29th annual Arts & Crafts Show Oct. 25 at Batavia High School, 1201 Main St., Batavia. The show will include seasonal decor, jewelry and items for all ages. The event also will include a bake sale and raffle. The sale will be open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is $5 and includes a raffle ticket. 

Cantigny to host catapult contest
Cantigny Park will host a catapult contest at 10 a.m. Oct. 25. Contestants can compete in three categories — distance, shot group, and accuracy. Awards will be presented for 1st and 2nd place finishers in each category. The park is located at 1S151 Winfield Road, Wheaton. For more information, call 630-688-5161.

Plenty of Fall activities set for October's first weekend



Batavia Vikings set annual Chili Cook-off

Batavia’s Viking Ring Lodge 18 will conduct its fourth annual Chili Cook-off at 1 p.m. Oct. 4 at the lodge, 104 N. Van Nortwick Ave., Batavia. The event is open to the public. Tickets for sampling the chili are $5 and can be purchased at the event. Lori and I always enjoy attending the event and sampling the many varieties of chili. I hope to see you there. The cook-off benefits the Batavia United Way and the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance Burn Camp.  For more information, call 630-502-8335.

Cantigny Park to host Civil War Reenactment

Cantigny Park will host a Civil War Reenactment Oct 4. and Oct. 5. The event will include a Civil War cannon fire, living history portrayals, and educational activities for all ages. Visitors can watch portrayals of Civil War soldiers, Abraham Lincoln, Mary Todd Lincoln and others. The event is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday. There is a $5 per vehicle parking fee. The park is located at 1S151 S. Winfield Road, Wheaton. Holmstad's annual bazaar features crafts and more

The Holmstad will conduct its 37th annual bazaar from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 4. Shoppers will find hand-made crafts, gently used furniture and other items for the home. For more information, call 630-879-4000.

Elburn Lions Club plans Fall Classic All Wheel Show

The Elburn Lions Club will host its 21st annual Fall Classic All Wheel Show Oct. 5 at Lions Park, 500 S. Fillmore St., Elburn. The show will open at 8 a.m. and will feature 40 classes for cars, trucks, and motorcycles. The event also includes a craft show and children’s activities. Refreshments will be available for purchase. Admission is free for spectators. 

St. Mark's to offer annual Blessing of the Animals
St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Geneva will conduct its annual Blessing of the Animals at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 5 on the lawn of the old courthouse on Third Street in downtown Geneva. The public is invited to bring animals of all sizes, including dogs, cats, horses, cows, birds, pigs, turtles, snakes, and lizards. The church conducts the blessing in conjunction with the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi.
Garfield Farm’s celebrates Harvest Days
Garfield Farm Museum continues its Harvest Days celebration Oct. 5 with continuous demonstrations of 19th century farm skills. The day’s activities begin at 11:30 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m. The event also will include period music and food. Cantigny Park to host D-Day commemoration


Cantigny Park in Wheaton will commemorate the 70th anniversary of D-Day with a variety of activities on Saturday, June 7. Programs will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the First Division Museum, the Robert R. McCormick Museum and the Cantigny Visitors Center.
Visitors will have an opportunity to meet World War II veterans who participated in D-Day, the Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied France on June 6, 1944. Visitors also will have an opportunity to view a Higgins boat, a WW II landing craft. On D-Day, members of the 1st Infantry Division were carried to Omaha Beach, one of five invasion beaches, in Higgins boats. 
Cantigny Park will offer activities for all ages during the event. The park is located at 1S151 Winfield Road, Wheaton. For more information, 630-668-5161.

Bob Leonard 5K Run set for Aug. 10



The River Corridor Foundation of St. Charles will conduct its annual Bob Leonard 5K Run and Walk-a-Thon at 8 a.m. Aug. 10 at Pottawatomie Park, 8 North Ave., St. Charles. The 5K run is USATF certified and will be chip timed. Sign-in for the run begins at 7 a.m. The run will begin at 8 a.m. The walk will begin at 8:05 a.m. The walk is pet and stroller friendly. Jackson to host seminar
Eddie Jackson, our friend at Country Financial in Batavia, sends word that he will host a free retirement planning seminar at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 20 at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, 1 Cougar Trail, Geneva. The program will feature a presentation by Dave Gallico, a financial security consultant. Reservations are encouraged and should be completed by Aug. 16. Cantigny Park to celebrate French Connection Day
Cantigny Park in Wheaton will host its annual French Connection Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 11. The event commemorates Robert R. McCormick’s service as commander of an artillery unit in 1918 at Battle of Cantigny in France. McCormick is the benefactor of Cantigny Park. The event will offer a French open air market, wine tastings, French music and French food. Parking at the park is $5 per vehicle. For more information, call the park at 630-668-5181.

EvenFlow to welcome Thunder Road
EvenFlow Music and Spirits in downtown Geneva will host a performance by Thunder Road, a seven-piece rock and roll ensemble, at 9 p.m. Aug. 10. EvenFlow is located at 302 W. State St., Geneva. For more information, call 331-248-0269

Acquaviva Winery, NIU partner for star gazing event
Our friends at Acquaviva Winery in Maple Park send word that they plan to partner with NIU's Stem Cafe for a star gazing event from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Aug. 11. Astronomy experts will talk about telescopes and the annual Perseid meteor shower, meteors from the Perseus constellation. The showers reach their peak in mid-August. Food and drinks will be available for purchase starting at 7:30 p.m. The presentation will begin at 8 p.m., and guests can view the meteor shower using NIU telescopes from 9:15 p.m. to the conclusion of the event. Mystery Diner scores again
Lori and I recently visited the Golden Egg Pancake House in North Aurora after reading the Mystery Diner’s positive review of the restaurant in the Kane County Chronicle. The Golden Egg is located at 459 S. Randall Road in North Aurora. The location is the former home of the Randall Crossing restaurant. Lori and I find the Mystery Diner’s reviews reliable references for local eateries. We happily concur with the Mystery Diner’s review of the Golden Egg. During our visit, Lori ordered the breakfast tacos, and I had the avocado and bacon omelet. We were both pleased with our meals and noted the friendly and attentive service. We look forward to our next visit to the restaurant. The Golden Egg serves breakfast and lunch. For more information about the restaurant, call 630-326-9807.

Sugar Grove Park District to host bird watching class



The Sugar Grove Park District will offer a beginning bird watching class from 7 to 9 a.m. May 4 at Bliss Woods Forest Preserve, 5S660 Bliss Road, Sugar Grove. Participants will learn how to identify birds by sound and other clues. Participants are urged to bring binoculars. Cantigny Park to host open house
Cantigny Park will host an open house featuring its horticulture department from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 5 at the park, 1S151 Winfield Road, Wheaton. Visitors will have an opportunity to tour the park’s greenhouse, where more than 1,000 varieties of flowers are nurtured annually. Visitors should enter through the main gate on Winfield Road. Trams will be available to take visitors from the main parking lot to the greenhouse.

O' Sole Mio Gelato sets grand opening
The Batavia Chamber of Commerce will conduct a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. May 4 at O’ Sole Mio Gelato, 27 N. River St., Batavia. The ceremony is part of O’ Sole Mio’s grand opening celebration. The business offers authentic Italian gelato and coffee, sandwiches and more. The event is open to the public. Golf outing to benefit Riverwoods campus
Fox Valley Christian Action will host its annual golf challenge to benefit Riverwoods on May 20 at the Royal Fox Country Club in St. Charles. Check-in will begin at 10:30 a.m. Golf will begin with a shotgun start. The event will include a banquet and awards. Registration is available online at www.fvchristianaction.org. The Riverwoods campus is located at 35W624 Riverwoods Lane, St. Charles. 

Batavia Chamber plans golf outing
